Grindeks Fund For the Support of Science and Education, founded in 2006, continuously supports higher education institutions, secondary educational institutions and teachers, facilitating excellence, as well as the promotion of pharmaceutical and chemical industries.
Support for Scientists
Grindeks awards the most outstanding Latvian scientists
The outstanding gastroenterologist professor Juris Pokrotnieks has been granted the Grindel award for lifetime achievement in Latvian medicine and pharmacy. While academician Ivars Kalvins, inventor of Mildronate®, has been awarded with the “Golden Owl” for his significant accomplishments in science. Likewise three “Silver Owl” awards have been granted to the most perspective young scientists. All these scientists have been awarded by Latvian pharmaceutical company Grindeks, involving the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
D.H.Grindel medal was first awarded in 1995 and it is presented in honour of the first Latvian natural origin scientist, doctor, pharmacist and professor David Hieronymus Grindel (1776-1836). This award has been previously granted to academician professor Janis Stradins, professor Elmars Grens, head of Latvian centre of cardiology professor Andrejs Erglis, as well as other excellences. While the “Golden Owls” and “Silver Owls” are granted since 1998 and are presented every two years.
Support for Young Talents of Chemistry
International Chemistry Olympiad
For several years, Grindeks has successfully and actively cooperated with the Latvian Ministry of Science and Education. Annually, Fund For the Support of Science and Education financially supports the participation of young talents of chemistry in an international chemistry Olympiad.
Profession Days for Pupils
Look in the Potential Future Profession
Grindeks created a project Profession Days for Pupils in 2010 with an aim to encourage children’s interest in chemistry and introduce them to career possibilities in pharmaceutical industry. Every year, 40 participants spend a day in the company along with a professional of a chosen area of pharmacy. Young people get an insight into their potential future profession to understand whether they would like to associate their studies and professional life with chemistry and pharmacy.
Support for Students and Young Professionals
Grindeks annually provides a significant number of internship placements to support chemical and pharmaceutical students and young professionals, thus promoting professional growth and career development. In recent years, more than 600 young specialists have fulfilled their internships in Grindeks.

Day for Children of Our Employees
Celebrating the End of School Year
Traditionally, to celebrate the end of school year, Grindeks organises a special event for children of the company’s employees. Children both improve their knowledge of chemistry and pharmacy as well as are entertained in a scientific atmosphere.
Riga City Festival
Infotainment at Pharmacy Museum Riga
In August each year, within the framework of Riga City Festival, the Pharmacy Museum in Riga and Grindeks organise an infotainment event to promote pharmaceutical and chemistry industries as well as public awareness.
